Seasonal Medical Chi Kong |
|
Chinese medicine recognizes five seasons throughout the year, rather than the
traditional four – autumn, winter, spring, summer and late summer. Each season
is closely linked to specific areas of the human anatomy. In Chi Kong there are
exercises that are more uniquely suited to each of the seasons, which focus on
preventing specific seasonal illnesses and maintaining general health.
These series of exercises are
specifically designed to strengthen the immune system, rejuvenate and prevent
seasonal illnesses. Each season has its own series of exercises.
The seasons comprise of Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer and Late
Summer. During each of the seasons, emphasis is placed more on
improving flow of energy and functionality in one area, but
without neglecting the other areas as well.
For example:
Autumn
-
Lungs and Large Intestine
Winter
-
Kidneys and Bladder
Spring
-
Liver and Gall Bladder
Summer
-
Heart, Pericardium and Small Intestine
Late
Summer
- Spleen and Stomach

Ba Duan Jin - Eight
Pieces of Brocade series |
|
Said to have been brought to
China from India in the 5th century A.D., The 8 Pieces of Brocade Chi Kong
exercises were the basis for Chinese Medical Chi Kong over a thousand years and
was integral to the development of the Yi Jin Jing, or "Muscle/Tendon Changing Classic."
That also means that it was essential in the creation of arts like Tai Chi
Chuan.
This practice is essential to ensure health and longevity. Made up of a
series of stretching routines with accompanied breathing, the 8 Pieces of
Brocade is one of the oldest and most widely practiced exercises in the world.
The exercises can be done either sitting or in a standing position.
Please note that this form is
generally taught around the late summer season, during September time.
